There are many reputable and talented Ad Agencies and Creative Consulting Firms out there that do great work, the same type of work we do. However, you usually have agree to a project before any designing gets done, a sometimes costly project that can take a month or longer to get through.

The best firms conduct exhaustive "requirements gathering", "discovery", and "analysis" exercises. Each firm's approach is slightly different, but most use multi-page surveys, round table sessions between their team and yours, and a lot of market research before results are produced.

On the back end of this phase, reports and presentations resulting from the process are designed to validate what you thought you knew about your company and uncover opportunities to fill gaps and differentiate yourself in your market. They may include some level of graphical design but precious little graphical design work is actually performed until needs are assessed and everything is validated. All of this can be useful but typically this is Phase Zero of a multi-Phased Project.
